The problem
The start-up needed a fractional share investment app that shows the portfolio status by intuitively presenting the proportion of each share, supports buying and selling, and offers a new, fun UX distinguishable from conventional finance apps. The challenges were about limited resources: two months of part-time work (four hours a day), a core buy and sell function that had to fit within two pages, and few references for a UX unlike typical investment apps.
Process
I led the project end to end: building a design system, ideating early concepts, running design sprints, presenting regularly to leadership and delivering final assets. To make investing feel easy and familiar, I borrowed the UX of grocery and coffee apps from the food and beverage industry. To keep rich information from overwhelming people, I introduced the swiping motion of dating apps, so users can move around a wheel to browse their portfolios. A limited set of components was reused across pages on both mobile and tablet, which reduced development work and kept the design consistent. Onboarding presents the app's values, sign-up is short, and search finds products by ticker or company name.
Outcome
I delivered a fractional share investment app MVP for mobile and tablet, from market research and requirement gathering to wireframes, prototypes and final assets. Portfolios can be browsed by swiping around a wheel, sign-up asks for far less than traditional financial apps, and the limited component set kept design and development efficient.
